The Instituto Cervantes, a Spanish public institution, was created in 1991 to further the teaching of Spanish and Spain’s vernacular languages and enhance the visibility of Spanish and Latin American culture. It is present in 90 cities in 43 countries on five continents. Our Headquarters are located in Madrid and Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), the birthplace of the writer Miguel de Cervantes. Our multimedia platform features an internet portal on language and culture in Spanish-speaking countries, the Cervantes Virtual Center.
Our objectives and responsibilities are:
- To organise general and special language courses in Spanish and all of Spain’s vernacular languages
- To issue Diplomas in Spanish as a Foreign Language (Spanish initials, DELE) on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport and organise the respective exams
- To update teaching methods and teacher training
- To support the work of hispanists
- To participate in programs designed to enhance the visibility of the Spanish language
- To conduct cultural activities in conjunction with other Spanish and Latin American organisations and institutions in host countries
- To provide the general public with libraries fitted with the most advanced technologies
The work of the Instituto Cervantes is directed by representatives from the worlds of academia, culture and literature from Spain and Latin America.
In the UK we work closely with British museums, galleries, theatres, publishers and universities as well as with Spanish and Latin American organisations.
The Instituto Cervantes in London is located in the central London, and its history as a Spanish cultural center goes back over sixty years.
We offer Spanish language courses for all levels, from complete beginners to proficiency (A1 – C2 of the CEFR) seven days a week, aimed at developing the students’ ability to understand, speak, read and write in Spanish. We also have a wide range of more specific courses such as online courses (AVE), courses to prepare for the DELE Spanish official exams, GCSE, AS and A2 levels, general business Spanish, Spanish for medical professionals, translation, language & culture (literature, history), conversation courses, Latin dance, Spanish for children and teacher training courses. Other courses and private and corporate tuition are available on demand.
There is a full program of cultural events including lectures, film screenings, book launches, theatre and exhibitions. As a general rule, the events are free and simultaneous translation is provided.
The library collection contains more than 30,000 books, publications and DVDs. The library's facilities are available to all, although you must be a member in order to borrow items.
